LA MORTE DI SOCRATE
-JACQUES LOUIS DAVID-

THE DEATH OF SOCRATES
-JACQUES LOUIS DAVID-
🇬🇧
Jacques-Louis David is a French painter who lived during the neoclassical movement, as can be seen from his artworks, in the 8th century. One of his biggest artwork is the most important building is the "The Death of Socrates".
David wanted to paint the previous moment of Socrates. The philosopher had been accused of corruption of the young and impiety, he didn't believe in other gods of the Athens' city and he introduced others. He received the death penalty by means of the hemlock, a strong poison if swallowed blocks blood circulation. In the painting Socrates doesn't show himself particularly interested in his imminent death, what demonstrates that is in fact his right hand which doesn't reach the bowl filled with hemlock. Rather it tries to turn it into genuine life lesson for his pupils. Socrates is represented with a muscular body, dressed in a white robe and he's sitting on a bed to the centre of the painting, while the left hand which is raised means the sky. With Socrates there are also his pupils and the executor who is handing him the bowl. Everybody is refusing to look at their teacher making the faithful act. The man at the end of the bed, whose back is facing Socrates, is Plato who is reflecting quietly.
